It's tough to realize Clayton's gone ... that's for sure. After reading the number of submissions to this blog ... it just goes to show how unassuming Clayton was. He had accomplished so much yet he remained so down to earth and low key about it all. That is the mark of a good man. Quietly accomplishing his goals without bragging, having an ego and treating people in a kind, caring way. He always had a joke and a funny story for everyone. Never complained. Loved him... love his family ... great people. Although we will all miss him, I am smiling to think he is walking right now. :-) ... this isn't good-bye ... but see you later, Clayton! ....(He REALLY would hate all this mushy stuff, I know! ... lol)

To Clayton,

When I incurred a spinal cord injury in 2002 you were the first person in the wheelchair community to come and visit me at the hospital. At that time I recall that I was very discouraged with my new circumstances and I remember talking with you and seeing how much joy and happiness you embodied. In having an opportunity to talk with you and ask you all of the important questions, I realized that life does goes on after an injury such as ours.

Not only did you help me overcome my initial hard times, but you also assisted me with getting involved in wheelchair sports. I remember when you ordered a race chair for me and brought it by the house for me to check out - my first thoughts were there is no way in hell I will ever contort my body to fit in this thing. However, you insisted that it gets easier and you were right - it did get easier and it wasn't an issue as time went on. I thank you for pushing me to overcome this little hurdle, as I truly enjoyed my time wheeling with you and I still enjoy the sport today.

After all of the things you gave to me, I am so happy that I have been able to give back to you in some little way. As I was injured skiing, this sport has always been a passion of mine. In the last few years our relationship had evolved to a new level as you started to learn and master sit skiing. It was really good to be able to spend time with you out at the hill skiing, as you are a very funny guy and always had a way of making me laugh. I recall one of the first days that you and Zoe were able to go skiing on your own. I can say that I was very proud of you for trying something new and sticking with it. I can also say that it made me feel real good seeing you ski with Zoe as it made me believe that I too can have a relatively normal relationship with my future children one day.

Ever since we first met I could tell that we would get along. I will certainly miss you as you were a person that I considered to be one of my close friends. I will think of you when I am pushing in my chair, when I carving up the ski hill and when I just need a laugh.

To Ruth, Jasmine and Zoe.

I know words can not express the deep sympathy and sadness that I feel for your family right now. My hope is that by reading how much your husband and father meant to me personally you will take comfort in the fact that he lead a very noble, considerate and amazing life. I truly respect Clayton for all that he has done for so many people. I can honestly say that I am a better person for having known him. I would like to think that pieces of him will live on through me.

As I considered Clayton a close personal friend I am obligated by that friendship to do all I can to help your family in coping with this loss. I extend my helping hand in your time of need. Please do ask.

Clayton was a real hero, helping our family through some of the darkest moments and letting us see that there was light at the end of the tunnel. His devotion to sport and his enthusiasm was contagious. Our hearts and prayers go to Ruth, Jasmine and Zoe. Remembering Clayton learning to Alpine Ski at Mission Ridge with Zoe helping out will always put a smile on our face.

Clayton was a person you could talk to anytime and know he was a true friend, great father and would be there for you. Our family is still in shock. We were neighbors to the Gerein's for a few years in Pilot Butte and talked regularly to Clayton and his family. Clayton was a special person who we were privileged to call a friend. Our hearts and prayers go to Ruth, Jasmine and Zoe. Remembering Clayton training around Pilot Butte will always keep a smile on our face.
