Facts
- People with disabilities are less likely to participate in regular moderate physical activity than their able bodied peers, yet have similar needs to prevent disease and promote health.
- Properly prescribed exercises for spinal cord injuries are difficult to find, and literature is almost nonexistent.
- In previous studies, investigators found that a sedentary lifestyle makes everyday living and moving in a wheelchair a more stressful event when levels of fitness are low.
- Other studies have concluded that physical inactivity was found to be a major factor in the deteriorating physical health of persons with disabilities.
Physical Activity
- Assists in maintaining adequate levels of muscular strength and endurance.
- Helps decrease cholesterol and the risk of high blood pressure
- Improves posture and reduces pains from sitting
- Increases circulation which reduces blood pooling in swelled legs
- Reduces spastic muscles (tightness)
- Decreases anxiety and depression and give the individual a greater feeling of independence
- Improves quality of life
The Program
- One-on-one specialized treatment based on the clients goals
- Fitness plans are provided to clients where they feel most comfortable (home, gym, etc.)
- Inspires, motivates and educates all clients to continue to exercise by following a weekly/monthly/yearly training program, while noting their progress in a weekly training journal.
